6 Things to Know When Choosing the Right NDIS Provider
September 24, 2025What Are Hoists and Why are They Important?
For many NDIS participants, especially those with limited mobility or spinal injuries, hoists are an essential piece of assistive technology. Hoists allow for safe and dignified transfers from beds, wheelchairs, toilets, and showers.
At Spinal Home Help, we understand how the right equipment can transform daily life. Our Experienced Brisbane based team supports NDIS participants in choosing and using hoists that fit their unique needs.
Types of Hoists
Not all hoists are the same! Choosing the right one depends on the individual’s unique physical needs, the home environment, and the level of support required.
1: Mobile Hoists
Also known as floor hoists, these are portable and versatile. They’re commonly used in the home and hospital settings for short transfers.
Best for:
- Participants with space for manoeuvring
- Shared environments
- Temporary support needs
2: Ceiling Hoists
Ceiling hoists are permanently installed and operate on a track system across a room or several rooms
Advantages over:
- Space-saving
- One Person Operation
- Smoother transfers from locations
Disadvantage:
- Can be more expensive than a mobile hoist due to a more complex installation process
3: Sit-to-Stand Hoists
These assist those who have some mobility but need help to stand safely.
Ideal for:
- Rehabilitative purposes
- Increasing Independence
- Preventing falls during transfers
Safety Tips When Using a Hoist
- Please seek the help of an occupational therapist in the assessment and recommendation of the most appropriate hoist for you.
- The occupational therapist will then be able to provide guidance to you and your support worker(s) on how to safely operate the hoist.
- Ensure regular equipment maintenance
- Carers should be trained and confident in use
- Don’t be afraid to communicate with your carer about your mobility needs during transfers.
- Never exceed weight limits
At Spinal Home Help, safety and comfort go hand-in-hand. We provide comprehensive support to ensure your hoist is used correctly, ensuring you can move about confidently.
